AES-256, and what a password can and cannot do.

The exported file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest scheme in current PDF readers, and verified as such: a protected export reports as Standard V5 R6 256-bit AES. Opening it requires the password in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and every mainstream reader.

A password protects the file, not the information once it is open. Anyone who can open the document can copy text out of it, screenshot it or forward it. If particular details must never be readable at all, remove them with Redact PDF before protecting the file rather than relying on the password alone.

The password is used for that one export and is never stored. That also means it cannot be recovered: if you lose it, the file cannot be opened, by us or by anyone else. Send the password to the recipient over a different channel than the document itself.

What encryption is used?

AES-256, written as a standard PDF encryption dictionary, so the file is readable by any current PDF reader once the correct password is supplied.

Is my password stored anywhere?

No. It is used to encrypt that single export and then discarded. Nothing retains it, which also means it cannot be recovered if you forget it.

Can I protect a PDF I have just edited?

Yes. Password protection is applied at export, so all your text edits, annotations, signatures and page changes are inside the encrypted file.

Why is the export button not responding?

A protected export is blocked until the password is long enough and its confirmation matches. The reason is stated next to the export button rather than left for you to guess, and the button is linked to that explanation for screen readers.
