Choose a report, paper, thesis or other long document.

02

Add a bookmark.

Go to a page, enter its section title and choose a level.

The sidebar readers actually use.

A PDF outline is the collapsible list of section titles a reader shows beside the page. In a two-hundred-page report it is the difference between finding section 4.2 in a second and scrolling for a minute, and it is what makes a scanned bundle navigable at all. Plenty of documents are exported without one, particularly when they were assembled from several files.

Bookmarks here are added where you are: go to a page, name it, choose how deeply it nests, up to six levels, and it appears in the outline. An existing outline is preserved rather than replaced, so you can add the three entries a merged bundle is missing without losing the structure the original file already had.

The sidebar in the editor shows the document’s existing outline too, and its entries navigate to the corresponding page, so you can check the structure you are building as you build it.

Questions about this tool.

The things worth knowing before you edit the document.

Will my existing bookmarks be replaced?

No. New entries are added alongside the outline already in the document, so a file that arrived with a table of contents keeps it.

How many levels can I nest?

Up to six, which covers chapter, section and subsection structures in reports, theses and manuals.

Are bookmarks the same as links?

No. A bookmark appears in the reader’s navigation sidebar and jumps to a page. A link is a clickable area on the page itself. Use Add links to PDF for the second.

Do bookmarks work in every PDF reader?

They are written into the document outline, which every mainstream reader supports, though some display the sidebar only when you open it. Acrobat, Preview and Chrome all show them.
