A link is an area, not a colour.

In a PDF a link is a rectangle with a destination attached, entirely separate from the text underneath it. That is why blue underlined text in an exported design file often does nothing when clicked: it looks like a link but no link annotation was ever created. Drawing the area yourself is the fix, and it also means you can make an image, a logo, a button graphic or a whole table cell clickable, not just text.

Because the link is a separate object, the page design is untouched. Nothing is recoloured, no underline appears and the layout does not shift. If you want a visible cue, add one with the annotation tools and place the link area over it.

Destinations are checked while you type. A PDF can only act on certain schemes, so a value it cannot use is flagged immediately rather than accepted quietly and discovered as a dead link by whoever you sent the document to.

Questions about this tool.

The things worth knowing before you edit the document.

What kinds of links can I add?

Web addresses using https:// or http://, and email addresses using mailto:. Those are the destinations a PDF reader will act on when clicked.

Does adding a link change how the page looks?

No. The link is a separate annotation covering the area you drew, so nothing is recoloured or underlined and the layout does not move. Add a visual cue with the annotation tools if you want the link to be visible.

Can I make an image or a button clickable?

Yes. The link area is just a rectangle you draw, so it can cover an image, a logo, a table cell or a designed button as easily as a line of text.

What happens if I mistype the destination?

A destination the PDF format cannot use is flagged while you type, so you fix it in the editor rather than discovering a dead link after the file has been sent. You can also reopen a placed link from the inspector and change its destination.
